New Work
Superimposition - UK/HK
Red Eye Photography Network & Open Eye GalleryI am pleased to announce a new work,: Superimposition (UK-HK)

Introducing, a new collaboration with Fong Hin Nam and Wong Pak Hang, 2022. It is part of the Peer to Peer Exchange: UK & Hong Kong Commission, Red Eye Photography Network, Manchester & Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. 2022.

“In this project, we explored the historical, cultural, temporal, and spatial connection between the United Kingdom and Hong Kong through the double exposure of objects and spaces. This project signifies not only the colonial history of the UK to HK but also the post-colonial state of these two places. We focused on the similarity of objects and spaces from these two areas, including streetlights, self-portraits, buildings, construction sites, post boxes and windows.

Following this project, we used a photogrammetry technique to represent post-boxes from the UK and HK, and generated 3D models out of these images. When we overlaid these models, we produced a digital, 3D version of double exposure. The merged post box model highlights the connection between these two places spatially and historically. We extracted the colours of both post boxes from the models to flat images to reflect the post-colonial visual culture and political symbols in daily life. Through the plain renderings, we tried to explore the transformative materiality of the post boxes.”

New Work
Curating Climate: Nature Now
Signal Film & Media & Grizedale Forest

Curating Climate: Nature Now is a commission for super/collider by Signal Film and Media & Forestry England
super/collider visited the forest with local participants from Barrow In Furness. We explored the different histories of Grizedale Forest and how it is being managed in the face of the climate crisis, with a series of visits between May and August 2022.

For my individual exploration, I was keen to document storm damage, as these have become more prevalent due to climate change. I have produced these images primarily using sustainable  analogue photographic processes to minimise the environmental impact of my artistic practice. I used caffenol (coffee) developer and cyanotypes toned with oak bark from the forest.

This work accompanies a collaborative Polaroid artwork, exhibition at Grizedale Visitor Centre and risograph zine which were co-created by local participants and super/collider.  super/collider is co directed by myself and Louise Beer.

New Work
Glacial Movements & The Ghaib
Hunza, Pakistan

Above you can see one of the first images that I have produced from a new collaborative project “Glacial Movements and the Ghaib” with Lumen Studios and The Pak Khawateen Painting Club. This project has been supported by the British Council.

The photographs were taken on an impromptu trip up a mountainous path at Eagles Nest in Hunza, Pakistan. In the next few weeks, I will be developing photographs from several glacial expeditions which took place in September 2022. I hope to create a new chai film developer recipe, using ‘Tapal Danedar’ chai, for photographs produced on our glacial expedition.

Glacial Movements and the Ghaib” is part of the British Council Pakistan-UK New Perspectives 2022 programme.

“The project was selected through an open call that awarded four grants to proposals co-developed between Pakistan and UK partners that offer opportunities for cross-cultural creative practices, knowledge exchange and new artistic work.

Pak Khawateen Painting Club and Lumen will develop experimental art works based upon shared research activities and an expedition to the Gilgit Baltistan region. In Hunza we worked indigenous communities and local experts to recognise the severe impact climate change has and will continue to have on indigenous people whilst considering themes of sustainable tourism and migration. The project builds upon Pak Khawateen Painting Club’s previous expeditions on the River Indus, supported by the Lahore Biennale 2020, Graham Foundation and Sharjah Art Foundation 2023. The two groups will exhibit artworks informed by the project in a series of exhibitions in Pakistan and the UK in late 2022.

Pakistan-UK New Perspectives 2022 programme has been launched to celebrate Pakistan’s 75th anniversary of Independence in 2022. The programme features projects addressing shared global challenges including but not limited to digital innovation, environmental sustainability, gender equality, diversity and inclusion principles, and empowering young leaders of the future.”

Conference on Social and Environmental Justice for a Sustainable Future
Canterbury Christ Church University

I will be chairing a panel at the Conference on Social and Environmental Justice for a Sustainable Future at Canterbury Christ Church University

“To mark our Diamond Jubilee celebrations, we have created an interdisciplinary day that explores, analyses, and celebrates social and environmental justice and its application to providing a sustainable future. Through presentations, workshops and interactive activities featuring academics, environmentalists, and individuals with lived experience, we have sought voices, images, words, and sounds that reflect what social and environmental justice means to us individually and collectively.”

I will be facilitating this panel discussion as part of my Lecturer In Photography role at Canterbury Christ Church University.
